The pre-modern Russian written vernacular beside Church Slavonic. It is distinct from Ruthenian/Old Ukrainian, although older scholarship sometimes used confusing names.

Full vernacular Bible translation is late. Before the 19th century, Russian Orthodox biblical text remains mainly Church Slavonic.
